Né le 18 Octobre 1987 à San Luis Obispo en Californie, Zac grandit près de Arroyo Grande. Dès l'age de 11 ans, et après que ses parents aient réalisé l'ampleur de ses dons de chanteur, il fait un pas vers la comédie.

Ses leçons de chant le menent à décrocher un rôle dans la pièce "Gypsy", qui fut représentée à plus de 90 reprises à travers le pays. Après être apparu sur scène dans "Peter Pan", "Mame", "Little Shop of Horrors" et "The Music Man," le public le suit rapidement sur le petit écran. C'est en 2002 qu'on le retrouve pour la première fois à la télévision dans "Firefly". S'en suivent rapidement des apparitions dans "Urgences", "The Guardian", ou encore "Les Experts : Miami".

Après des débuts prometteurs, Zac brille dans plusieurs téléfilms. Ses deux rôles pincipaux dans "The Big, Wide World of Carl Laemke" et "Triple Play", lui permettent d'interprêter en 2004 un jeune enfant autiste dans le téléfilm "Miracle Run", aux côtés de Mary-Louise Parker et d'Aidan Quinn. En 2005, après quelques apparitions en tant que guest star, il rejoint le casting régulier de la série "Summerland" où il y interprète le jeune Cameron Bale. Peu de temps après il donne la réplique à Bill Cobbs dans "La course miracle" où il interprête Patrick McCardle.

Début 2006, on le retrouve aux côtés de Vanessa Anne Hudgens et Ashley Tisdale, dans le téléfilm évènement de Disney Channel : "High School Musical". Il y interprète le rôle de Troy Bolton, le populaire capitaine de l'équipe de basket du lycée qui auditionne pour le premier rôle de la comédie musicale de l'année. Fort de ce succès qui le propulse en très peu de temps au rang de star mondiale, il fait une petite apparition dans un épisode de "La vie de Palace de Zack & Cody", puis se retrouve à l'affiche de l'adaptation cinématographique de la comédie musicale "Hairspray" dans laquelle il jouera Link Larkin.

Depuis le lycée, les sports favoris de Zac sont le golf, le sky, l'escalade et le snowboard. Il s'est également épris du surf après avoir passé plusieurs jours sur la plage pour "Summerland." Il fait du piano chez lui, et est actuellement en train d'apprendre seul, à jouer de la guitare. Pendant son temps libre, il rénove également 2 voitures, une Delorean et une Mustang convertible de 1965, qui lui ont été transmises par son grand-père.

Zac vit encore avec ses parents, David Efron et Starla Baskett, et son jeune frère Dylan. Ils ont deux Berger Australien Shepherd, Dreamer et Puppy, et un chat siamois très indépendant nommé Simon
